Welling manager Jamie Day has expressed his disappointment at losing Anthony Acheampong after the defender left for fellow Conference National newboys Barnet.
The 23-year-old was a key member of the Wings squad that won the Blue Square Bet South title last season, scoring seven goals in 44 appearances for Day’s side.
But despite being offered a new contract at Park View Road, Acheampong has opted to join the Bees, who will compete in the top tier of non-league football next term following their relegation from League Two.
The young centre-back arrived in Welling from Horsham in the summer of 2010, and his consistent performances last term earned him a call-up to the England C squad with Acheampong making his debut against Bermuda earlier this month.
Day told the club’s official website: “I’m disappointed to lose him as I think he has done well for us in the last three years.
“But at the same time, given the size of the club that we are and the wages we pay, when bigger clubs come after our players it is difficult to turn them down.
“I’ve spoken to Anthony at length over the past four or five weeks. We made him a good offer to stay but I understand why he has left and wish him well for the future.”
