Farnham's five-goal afternoon and a Weston washout

Farnham's five-goal afternoon and a Weston washout

National League South produced a Saturday that will take some beating. Eleven of the twelve fixtures were completed, one was washed away after half an hour, and the division's leaders, its form side and its most eye-catching result all had a story to tell.

A Saturday of goals, wind and standing water

The weather arrived first. Two storms swept in over the weekend and the programme was played in driving wind and rain, conditions that shaped the afternoon at Plainmoor and ended it altogether in Somerset.

Weston-super-Mare's home game with Billericay Town was abandoned after half an hour with the pitch waterlogged. Billericay, who had travelled 183 miles from Essex, led through Macauley Bonne's 22nd-minute goal, and Louis Britton had earlier had a fifth-minute effort ruled out for offside.

None of it will count. The result is void, the points unclaimed, and the fixture will have to be played again.

Alexander's five put Farnham in the headlines

The day's outstanding individual performance came at Farnham Town, where George Alexander scored five in a 6-0 win over Braintree Town. Alexander, signed from Hornchurch this month, had his first inside six minutes, converting Marcel Lavinier's cross on the debutant's own first appearance.

Billy Clifford had already volleyed Farnham ahead from Brandon Mason's cross to the back post. Braintree, now beaten in five league matches, never found a foothold in the game.

Ebbsfleet make their games in hand count

Ebbsfleet United beat Maidenhead United 4-0 and are still unbeaten. Ben Chapman scored his first career hat-trick, taking his tally to five goals in five games, and opened the scoring from Lennon Peake's 17th-minute cross.

Toby Edser made the second eight minutes later, and the margin could have been wider. The win left Ebbsfleet a point behind the leaders with two matches in hand.

Hvid's long afternoon at Plainmoor

Torquay United 1 Maidstone United 1 drew the division's biggest crowd of the day, 3,003, and 234 of them had travelled up from Kent. They saw Frankie Hvid turn Harry Shield's cross into his own net on 27 minutes, then head an 84th-minute equaliser from a Riley Court corner.

In between, Lenny Holden saved Cody Cooke's penalty on 32 minutes after George Fowler brought down Matt Jay. Hvid's header kept Maidstone top, and it is worth remembering how much the points that late goals move can decide over a winter.

Chelmsford's ninth draw

Chelmsford City's 3-3 draw with Tonbridge Angels was their ninth in eleven league games. Lyle Taylor scored his first goal since Easter Monday, nipping onto Hayden Bullas's back-pass and rounding Nathan Harness, and Harry Barbrook struck in consecutive league games for the visitors.

Chelmsford led twice and were pegged back twice, which is the story of their season so far: unbeaten, hard to beat, and rarely able to turn a draw into three points.

Truro's comeback and Dorking's win at Slough

Truro City recovered from 3-1 down to win 4-3 at Hampton & Richmond Borough. Tyler Harvey scored twice, with Ben Starkie and Tom Dean also on target, and the comeback took the Tinners to third in the table.

Wilson Waweru's first two goals for the Beavers and a solo effort from Bright Siaw had put the hosts in command. At Slough Town, Steve McKimm's first match in charge ended in a 3-1 defeat by Dorking Wanderers, Ruben Shakpoke finishing Saikou Janneh's through ball on 15 minutes before Josh Barrett sealed it.

Maidstone's 26 points from 13 games keep them top, with Ebbsfleet on 25 from 11 and Truro on 24 from 12. Chelmsford, unbeaten with nine draws, sit 15th on 15 points, while Slough Town have four.

  • Dagenham & Redbridge 2-0 Chesham United, Josh Addae scoring on 25 minutes.
  • Folkestone Invicta 2-0 Farnborough, Harvey Kedwell from 30 yards and Bobby Kelman on loan from Hornchurch.
  • Hemel Hempstead Town 1-3 AFC Totton, who ended a seven-game losing run.
  • Horsham 1-0 Walton & Hersham through Jamie Yila, and Salisbury 1-1 Dover Athletic.

The midweek programme offers an immediate test of the pecking order, because Maidstone host Ebbsfleet on Tuesday 27 October. On this evidence the title race and its points totals will look different again by November.
