Dover Athletic chairman Jim Parmenter turned down some “high profile” applicants before appointing Chris Kinnear as the club’s new manager.
Kinnear has led the Whites to three wins and a draw since succeeding Nicky Forster, with the newly appointed boss having previously held the managerial reins at Crabble Athletic Ground from 1985 to 1995.
Parmenter said: “It wasn’t a gamble at all. I’ve worked twice before with Chris and twice I’ve had success with him. That’s the whole reason I got him back.
“There were other options and it was the usual situation where lots of people rung up and I got some cryptic messages through third parties, some who were high profile.
“It wouldn’t be right to mention names but it would have been a bit like the situation that we were in when we appointed Nicky Forster.
“You don’t sack managers and hope other ones turn up – you’ve got to have a plan in mind.”
